Controversy over the electronic bracelet is back after statements by Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, who raised doubts about the device's effectiveness in preventing violence at the Senate question time. According to the Minister of Justice, the system "does not fit in with the timing of law enforcement" and "very often is incompatible with people's means of transportation": in case of an alarm, the victim would often be too far away for law enforcement to intervene in time. For this reason, Nordio explained, it is necessary to "alert the victim" so that he or she can quickly find shelter "in a church, pharmacy or protected place". It will ultimately be up to the magistrate, he added, to determine "what is sufficient distance to be able to secure the two parties".
