Enel, Ansaldo Energia, and Leonardo have established Nuclitalia, a corporation that will research advanced technologies and evaluate market opportunities in the emerging nuclear sector. 51% of Nuclitalia's shares are held by Enel, 39% by Ansaldo Energia, and 10% by Leonardo. Nuclitalia will be responsible for assessing the most advanced and innovative designs of modern sustainable nuclear power, with an initial emphasis on water-cooled Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The procedure will involve defining the unique needs for the country system and selecting the most viable solutions based on a thorough technical-economic analysis. The company will also look into potential for industrial alliances and co-design using an approach centered on innovation, environmental and economic sustainability, and improving the capabilities of the Italian supply chain. The founding partners have also defined the company’s leadership. The Board of Directors will have seven members and will be chaired by Ferruccio Resta, former rector of the Politecnico di Milano. Luca Mastrantonio, Head of Enel's Nuclear Innovation Unit, will take on the role of CEO.
