Southern Italy is experiencing a water crisis that is becoming worse by the week. The ANBI Observatory on Water Resources' customary report serves as a warning, as it emphasizes that the accumulation of water in the reservoirs has ceased for the past two weeks, and reserves are continuing to diminish in a concerning manner. The situation in Puglia is particularly severe where, according to the report, the province "has lost about 800,000 cubic meters of water in just 14 days, out of the barely 113 million it had managed to store". A figure that is considerably more worrying when compared to 2023: the current shortfall exceeds 76 million cubic meters. Things are no better in Basilicata, where in just seven days, water reserves fell by 2 million cubic meters. Here too, the comparison with last year is stark: more than 56 million cubic meters are missing. Campania is also preparing for challenging months, with increasingly feeble flows in canals and progressively declining reservoir levels. What's the cause? ANBI posits that it is "found in the persistent drought of the previous year, as well as in the scarce rainfall that characterizes the hydrological year in these territories, with a 15% decrease between October and March".
