On the occasion of the enthronement of Pope Leo XIV, Rome also became the scene of high-level diplomatic meetings. Among them, the most relevant took place at Palazzo Chigi, where Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The focus of the summit was the revival of the transatlantic dialogue and the issue of tariffs between the United States and the European Union. "A constructive discussion today at Palazzo Chigi with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen," Meloni wrote on social media. "Italy intends to play its part in relaunching the dialogue between the European Union and the United States: two realities called to face together the great global challenges". The U.S. Vice President stressed Italy's strategic role: "Italy is a bridge between us and Europe". The PM reiterated Italy's commitment to strengthen the unity of the West on common foundations: "Freedom, democracy and the centrality of the person are the common values on which to build a more secure, prosperous and stable future. Proud of this step forward for the unity of the West".
