The leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy held telephone talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday evening on the eve of his conversation with Vladimir Putin scheduled for today in an effort to end the conflict in Ukraine. Downing Street reported this in an official note. During the call, British PM Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni discussed the situation on the ground and the "catastrophic cost of the war for both sides". According to a statement from Palazzo Chigi, Meloni reiterated Italy's full support - in line with European and Western partners - for Trump's efforts to achieve a "just and lasting" peace, stressing the need for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. In a post on X, Macron recalled previous meetings in Kiev and Tirana and said, "It is now up to President Putin to show whether he really wants peace and to accept the 30-day unconditional ceasefire proposed by President Trump, supported by Ukraine and Europe”.
