Italians dislike cryptocurrencies. Few people are aware that digital currencies, such as Bitcoin and stablecoins, which are held in virtual wallets, can be used not only for investments but also for payments to businesses and retailers that accept them. Fifteen years after its introduction, cryptocurrencies have piqued the interest of one in every three Italians, the majority of whom are young individuals under the age of 34, and only a small fraction use them. This is according to a market research survey by SWG, which sought to understand the reasons for such hesitation. What has emerged? "They are risky", answered the vast majority of responders. Cryptocurrencies, which are mostly recognized for their problematic news stories about ambiguous financial transactions, are regarded as extremely risky investments that should only be used for speculation. Just under half of respondents feel that digital currency payments are as convenient, fast, and safe as regular electronic transactions (debit and credit cards), but the majority are concerned about the traceability of such transactions.
