2024 is confirmed as a record year for the cruise industry, with 34.6 million unique passengers worldwide and a projected increase to 37.7 million by 2025. CLIA, the international association of cruise lines, announced this in its State of the Cruise Industry report. The report emphasizes the critical role of the expansion of the offer, the modernization of ships, the introduction of innovative trends, and the diversification of itineraries. The industry is thriving: more than 80% of those who have previously taken a cruise want to repeat the experience, and 66% of those who have never been on board are eager to do so. The share of “new” cruisers is also significant, accounting for 31% of the total. Italian passenger numbers are likewise increasing, from 900,000 in 2019 to 1.15 million in 2024 (+28%). The average age is 42 years, down significantly from 43.2 in 2019. The Mediterranean is the most popular destination (84%), followed by the Caribbean (5.4%), and Northern Europe (5.1%). Europe and the Mediterranean are confirmed as the primary origin and destination markets, with an overall growth of 2.8% in 2024. Although cruise tourism accounts for less than 2% of global visitor flows, it has a considerable economic impact, with $168.6 billion created worldwide, including $55 billion in Europe and $16 billion in Italy (2023 data).
