Bus drivers and electricians, fiber and solar technicians—these are some of the most in-demand yet hardest-to-find professions in Italy. Despite advancements in autonomous driving, humans are still required to operate public transportation. The challenge is convincing new generations: drivers of buses, trams, and subways have become rare. The railway maintenance technician is the person who works on rails, switches, and railway infrastructure, usually in groups and on night shifts. A profession that is vital to the safety, efficiency, and punctuality of the service, and is also verified to be one of the most sought-after in 2025. There is also a shortage of fiber optic technicians. Ultrafast internet does not install itself: the fiber optic technician is responsible for the installation and maintenance of cable and high-speed connections. A key figure for homes, schools, and businesses, who blends traditional shipbuilding skills with cutting-edge digital capabilities. Likewise, solar technicians, electrical installers, construction site managers, specialized maintenance workers, and waiters are in short supply. The latter is a major shortage for a country that relies heavily on tourism.
