A 14-month-old baby died on June 7, 2023, in Casamassella, near Lecce, after suffering from a high fever for several days and being treated only with homeopathic medications. The parents, who face manslaughter charges, have agreed to a two-year prison sentence. According to the investigations, the baby had never had regular pediatric checkups, with the only appointment dating back more than a year. The procedure was advised by an ophthalmologist who is now being investigated and for whom the Prosecutor's Office has sought an indictment. The cause of death was cardiocirculatory arrest induced by interstitial pneumonia, most likely of viral origin. Despite fever spikes above 39°C, the parents allegedly refused to turn to conventional medicine. Prosecutors noted that even in previous episodes of fever, the child had been treated without any qualified medical consultation.
