Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has clarified his position on ID codes for police officers, ruling out the possibility that they will ever be adopted. He did so while speaking at a conference organized by the COISP Police Union, where he made it clear that he is against this measure. “I am very convinced that not only with this government and with this minister it will not happen, but I believe it will never happen,” Piantedosi said, explaining the reason for his no vote. The minister called the proposal to put “identification markings on the helmets” of officers “singular”, especially during events where many participants wear clothing designed precisely to prevent recognition. “The discussion arising from this is that it is the police officers who should have the identification mark on their helmets. I find this a bit peculiar, taking into account that there has never been a lack of full identification of the people involved in running the events,” Piantedosi added, stressing that law enforcement has always been able to identify anyone who participated in the events. Finally, the minister expressed concern about the possibility that the identification codes could be used “not by the judicial authority, but by someone else with malicious intent,” a risk that, according to him, justifies the rejection of the measure.
