Italy is one of the European countries that has been most significantly impacted by economic losses as a result of adverse weather events: from 1980 to 2023, it ranked second in the EU with approximately 134 billion euros, after Germany with €180 billion and before France with €130 billion. This is what the Istat Annual Report shows. According to the report, over 2,700 Italian municipalities, which account for approximately 35% of the total, are impacted by at least one category of environmental risk. Additionally, 18.2% of the value generated by industry and services is situated in regions that are more susceptible to these natural hazards, with 15.1% of this value being attributed to landslides. Insurance against catastrophic occurrences is a critical component in decreasing the costs of climate change, and while France and Germany are ahead, Spain and Italy are catching up.
