The sports court's penalty against Brescia could potentially enable Sampdoria, a Genoa-based club, among the most important in Italy, to remain in Serie B. On May 13, on the final day of the championship, Sampdoria was relegated for the first time in its history to Serie C, the third and lowest division of professional men’s soccer in Italy. On the other hand, Brescia had saved itself by finishing in 15th place in the standings with 43 points, two points ahead of Sampdoria (18th-place). However, according to investigations by the federal prosecutor's office, which is responsible for investigating sporting offenses, Brescia would not have consistently submitted income taxes and social security contributions to INPS (the competent national institute) for its members. If Brescia were to be found guilty, they would be relegated to Serie C, and Sampdoria would be allowed to play the play-outs against Salernitana to remain in Serie B
