It is the Northeast that dominates the ranking on quality of life by age group published by Il Sole 24 Ore and presented at the Festival of Economics 2025. Bolzano takes first place for the well-being of the over-65s, Treviso and Trento complete the podium. For young people (18-35 years old), Gorizia is confirmed at the top for the second year in a row, thanks to favorable employment dynamics and a high cultural and recreational offer. Lecco, on the other hand, is the ideal province for growing up: it stands out for the prevalence of sports among young children, school achievement and safety. The survey, supplemented by an Eumetra survey on the lifestyles of 11-15-year-olds conducted in collaboration with Save the Children, confirms a clear territorial gap. Of the top 30 provinces in the ranking, as many as 17 belong to the Northeast. The South, on the other hand, lags behind: Trapani is last among provinces for the elderly, Caltanissetta for children, while metropolitan cities suffer particularly from high rent costs. Rome is dead last for young people, followed by Naples, Milan and Turin. A snapshot that highlights persistent territorial inequalities in Italy, with the South and large cities penalized, and smaller northern provinces offering the best living conditions for all generations.
