The center-left made a strong showing in several Italian cities during the administrative elections on May 25-26. In Genoa, Silvia Salis emerged victorious in the initial round with 51.48% of the votes (124,720 preferences), surpassing the center-right candidate Pietro Piciocchi, who had 44.20% (107,091 votes). Piciocchi called the newly elected mayor to offer his congratulations, describing hers as “a victory with impressive numbers". Clear victory also in Ravenna, where the center-left maintains control of the city with Alessandro Barattoni winning 58.15% of the vote. Nicola Grandi (25.05%), a center-right challenger, is far behind, followed by Alvaro Ancisi (Lega, 6.47%) and Veronica Verlicchi (civic list, 4.40%). The scenario is different in Matera and Taranto, where a runoff will be required. In Matera, with 44 sections examined out of 62, Roberto Cifarelli (center-left) leads with 43.16%, followed by Antonio Nicoletti (center-right) with 37.33%. The Five Star Movement has already announced it will not support Cifarelli in the second round. Taranto will also have a runoff: Pietro Bitetti (center-left) leads with 37.32%, followed by Francesco Tacente (civic lists backed by the Lega) with 26.30%, with 116 out of 191 sections counted. Overall turnout reached 56.29%, slightly down from the previous election round (56.32%). Umbria saw the highest participation (64.30%), while Emilia-Romagna recorded the lowest (50.25%).
