Revolution in the short-term rental and bed-and-breakfast industry: the Lazio Regional Administrative Court (TAR) has overturned the Ministry of the Interior's ban dated November 18, which prohibited self-check-in and required in-person registration of visitors in non-hotel facilities. The decision acknowledges the requests of numerous trade associations, such as Aigab (Italian Association of Short-Term Rental Managers), who argued that the directive imposed an unjustifiable burden on a sector that is primarily composed of micro-enterprises and individuals, and that non-hotel facilities were unfairly penalized in comparison to hotels. The TAR highlighted that the government ban contradicted the 2011 reform, which was specifically targeted at lowering bureaucratic burdens for the tourism sector. In this regard, Aigab has communicated that it is currently in communication with the government to promote the implementation of technological solutions, including remote facial recognition, which are currently employed by the primary international platforms for vacation rental management.
