In a new surprise outing, Pope Leo XIV left the Vatican to visit the papal residence of Castel Gandolfo. Cardinal Baggio and Father Manuel Dorantes, the director of operations for the Borgo Laudato Si' project, greeted the Pontiff, who then spent some time in the Garden of the Virgin Mary, a location that was particularly meaningful to many of his predecessors. The visit continued in the Belvedere Gardens, where preparations are ongoing for the opening of the Borgo Laudato Si, a Pope Francis initiative established in 2023 to promote integral ecology by combining environmental protection and human dignity. A moving moment in the Cryptoporticus, Emperor Domitian's ancient hall, where the Pope recalled Pius XII's commitment to providing refuge to almost 12,000 people during the 1944 bombings of the Castelli Romani. The visit concluded with a tour of the Apostolic Palace and the historic Villa Barberini, before returning to the Vatican.
