In 2024, traffic fines are confirmed as an increasingly heavy item in the budgets of major Italian cities. In fact, revenue from fines for traffic violations has reached €650 million euros in the 20 monitored municipalities, an increase of 11.3% compared to 2023. Leading the ranking is Milan, which alone generated nearly €205 million, registering an impressive +57.5% year-on-year. In second place is Rome, with €169 million, while on the third step of the podium is Florence, with €61.5 million. Right behind is Turin, which closes with €45.3 million. But there’s more: Campobasso is the city with the largest percentage increase, going from €112,000 in 2023 to €308,000 in 2024: a +174% that signals a drastic change in controls or driver behavior. Significant growths also occurred in Milan (+39%) and Florence (+36.5%). Conversely, Perugia records the most significant slump, with a 56 % drop in collections: from €5.1 million in 2023 to €2.2 million in 2024. Overall, revenue from fines increased by more than €66 million compared to the previous year, when the same cities collected €583.8 million. The upward trend that opens the debate on road safety, control efficiency, and the use of resources from fines, which by law should be reinvested in sustainable mobility and prevention.
