During the Mass celebrated for the Jubilee of Families, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of marriage as the foundation of genuine love between man and woman, saying, "Marriage is not an ideal, but the canon of true love: total, faithful, fruitful love. A love that, in the image of God, enables us to give life". During his homily, the Pope addressed all members of the family, beginning with parents. He encouraged them to set a positive example for their children by being consistent and educating them "to freedom through obedience" while always pursuing their well-being. To the children, he called for gratitude, inviting them to say thank you “for the gift of life and for all we receive each day". A special thought was also dedicated to grandparents and the elderly, called to watch over their loved ones "with wisdom, compassion, humility, and patience". The Pope subsequently issued an appeal for unity, stating, "We are here to be 'one', as the Lord desires us to be 'one' – in the families and in the places where we live, work, and study – different, yet always one". He then emphasized that the family is the privileged place where faith is transmitted, along with life and everyday affections. "Through unity," he continued, "we will be a sign of peace to all. Let us not forget that families provide the foundation for people's futures. Christ calls us to be one, not an anonymous block, but united in our diversity".
