On World Milk Day, Italy commemorated its leadership in biodiversity by presenting 57 cheeses with a Protected Designation of Origin, in addition to the 531 registered among traditional agri-food products, for a total of 588 specialties symbolizing an unmatched dairy tradition. The most highly sought-after cheeses produced in Italy are Grana Padano, followed by Parmigiano Reggiano, Buffalo Mozzarella, Pecorino Romano, and Gorgonzola. The dominance of Italian cheeses has long transcended national lines, with Parmigiano Reggiano topping the global rankings compiled by TasteAtlas, the international atlas of traditional local dishes and products, with Mozzarella di Bufala Campana and Burrata also in the top ten. The supply chain consists of nearly 24 thousand cow stables and 110 thousand sheep and goat farms, resulting in a production of approximately 14 million tons of milk per year - the majority of which is cow milk - feeding a production chain worth more than 19 billion euros and employing over 200,000 people, both directly and indirectly.
