An eruptive cloud several kilometers high and visible even from a long distance towers over Mount Etna, causing tourists to flee and the population in the area around the volcano to fear. According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology Etna Observatory, in Catania, the cause would be a pyroclastic flow probably produced by a collapse of material from the northern flank of the Southeast crater. The new eruptive phase (the fourteenth in recent months), much filmed by videos and photos posted online, is currently unaffected. Catania airport, in fact, has remained operational at all times. While it is recorded that the ongoing eruptive phase is lowering its energy level, with the level of magma conduit tremor decreasing, reassurances also came from the President of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani. The latter said he is following through the regional Civil Protection the evolution of the situation on Mount Etna, specifying that at the moment there is no danger to the population. In addition, he said that the director of the regional Civil Protection, Salvatore Cocina, has been in constant contact since the early hours of this morning with the prefect of Catania and with the heads of the Etna National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. As Schifani let it be known, at the moment, from the first surveys, the material would not have exceeded the brink of the Lion Valley and there would be no danger to the population. After thanking the Civil Defense operators, local authorities and INGV experts for the immediate activation of monitoring and safety protocols, the Regional President stressed that Sicily is ready to intervene, if necessary, by any means to protect the population and the territory.
