One in two Italians is in favor of heterologous fertilization (54.7%). This procedure,in which gametes, oocytes and/or sperm come not from the couple, but from an external donor, is viewed by many as a chance to crown the dream of having children. Those most in favor turn out to be those between the ages of 25 and 44 (61.4%). Strong resistance remains expressed among Lega voters (61.7%), while doubts split the supporters of Fratelli d'Italia, who are divided between those in favor (43.9%) and those against (47.2%), raising ethical and legal issues. A ruling by the Consulta, called historic for the recognition of the children of two women born through medically assisted procreation, ruled that it is unconstitutional to prohibit the recognition of a child, born in Italy through this technique practiced abroad, by both mothers of a same-sex couple. Children born under these circumstances will then have the option of having two mothers and can be registered at the civil registry as children of both. According to the survey conducted by Only Numbers, nearly one in two citizens (48%) like this ruling.
