Vatican City – With a warm smile and a touch of humor, Pope Leo XIV welcomed a delegation from the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) to the Vatican, apologizing for the delay: «Apologies for being late, but today’s Vatican schedule included several audiences, and shortly I also have the general audience in St. Peter’s Square.» In his address, the Pope highlighted the deep and enduring bond between Italy and the Italian American community, noting that «tens of millions of Americans proudly claim their Italian heritage, even though their ancestors arrived in the United States generations ago.» He praised NIAF’s commitment to educating younger generations about Italian culture and history, and for its charitable work on both sides of the Atlantic: «Your efforts help maintain a concrete and mutually enriching connection between our two nations.» The Pope also paid tribute to the strong Catholic faith that many Italian immigrants carried with them to America, calling it a «hallmark of their identity» and a source of strength in times of hardship. Encouraging the Foundation in its ongoing mission, especially during today’s turbulent times, he said: «Remember the many saints who strengthened the Church in difficult periods of history. Let their example renew your hope and trust in the future.» He concluded with a blessing: «I pray that you and your families will always cherish the rich spiritual and cultural heritage passed down by those who came before you.» Following the meeting, Pope Leo XIV made his way to St. Peter’s Square for the traditional Wednesday general audience, greeted by a large crowd of pilgrims from around the world. Among them were folkloric groups—such as those from Mexico—in traditional dress. Riding in the popemobile, the Pope greeted the faithful, blessed children, and even signed a baseball. Continuing his series of catecheses on hope, the Pope delivered a heartfelt message about the dignity of life and the risks of undervaluing oneself: «Sometimes we feel like workers waiting in the marketplace, unsure if anyone will hire us. Time passes, and we may not feel seen or appreciated. And when that happens, we risk selling ourselves short, settling for whatever comes along. But the Lord reminds us: your life has value.» His words were especially directed at young people: «Don’t wait. Respond with enthusiasm to the Lord’s call to work in His vineyard. Don’t put it off—roll up your sleeves. The Lord is generous, and you won’t be disappointed! In working for Him, you’ll begin to answer that deep question within you: What is the meaning of my life?» Pope Leo concluded the audience with a message of encouragement: «Dear brothers and sisters, don’t be discouraged. Even in life’s darkest moments, when answers seem far off, ask the Lord to come find you. He is generous, and He will come soon.»
