VARD, a Norwegian subsidiary of Fincantieri Group and one of the world's leading specialty shipbuilders, has recently delivered two of the world's first vessels with cyber notation, the certification related to the cyber resilience of vessels. They are the Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOV) Grampian Kestrel and Purus Chinook, built for North Star and Purus companies, respectively. The vessels were designed and built to fully comply with new international regulations on naval cybersecurity, which came into effect on July 1, 2024. These standards, defined by the International Association of Class Societies (IACS) through UR E26 and E27 requirements, set mandatory standards for all new construction contracted from that date forward. Although these two ships were contracted in 2023, thus before the new rules became mandatory, they were still built according to the most advanced cyber security criteria. The units are able to withstand cyber attacks, continue operations and quickly restore full systems functionality, thanks to digital solutions integrated from the design phase. This double delivery represents an important step for the maritime industry, marking a first concrete example of the application of the new cybersecurity rules. It also confirms the commitment of VARD and the Fincantieri Group to advancing technological innovation and attention to digital security, elements that are increasingly central to ship design.
