What will Italians' vacations be like in the summer that is about to begin? The Touring Club Italiano Study Center's survey of TCI community travel plans tries to take a snapshot of how we will travel. In summer 2025, the strong desire to travel is confirmed: 75% of respondents say they will “definitely” take a trip (down slightly from 2024 and 2023) while another 18% will “probably” do so. Those who have already chosen to “certainly” stay at home are a very small share (2%) while 5% answered “probably not”. Overall, 93% of the community has a positive attitude toward the upcoming summer. The Bel Paese has always been the favorite summer vacation destination of our compatriots. While usually the Italy-foreign ratio expressed by the community has been about 60-40 roughly constant until 2019, in summer 2025 65% will choose a domestic destination while those who go abroad (35%) will mainly opt for trips to Europe (28%). About 7% will instead move to long-haul destinations where a decline in preference for the U.S. emerges. Looking at Italy, the favorite summer vacation region for the community will be Trentino-Alto Adige, followed by Sardinia, Puglia and Tuscany, which, compared to 2024, surpasses Campania. As for abroad, the most chosen destination countries will be France, Greece, Spain and Germany. If the sea remains fundamental in summer (44%, stable on 2024 but still above the 2019 figure), mountains (19%) return to surpass cities of art (17%) in 2025, perhaps in the train of the pandemic effect or as a consequence of climate change that pushes toward destinations that can offer more refreshment to tourists. Growing in 2024 is rural and village tourism (9%), which is for the sixth consecutive year higher than the 2019 figure. Departures will be concentrated this year in July (31%) although August follows closely (29%): this is a trend that is consolidating and returns a more even distribution of departures in the central summer months - with a substantial balance between July and August - and an increase, compared to 2019, of departures in June (19% vs. 14%) and September (16% vs. 14%). From the data for summer 2025, the majority of the community will travel with the family unit (71%), while 20% will travel with friends or relatives. Growing, for the third year in a row, is the percentage of those who go alone (9%) even compared to 2019 (6%). 26% of respondents say they have a pet: only 31%, a slight increase from 2024, however, will take it with them on vacation while the majority (69%) will leave it at home.
