Pescara’s football team has been promoted to Serie B: on Saturday evening, they defeated Ternana in a penalty shootout in the second leg of the Serie C playoffs final, the third and final men's category of professional soccer in Italy. Alessandro Plizzari, Pescara's goalkeeper, saved three penalties despite an injured ankle. The team has been in Serie C since 2021. It had also experienced a few seasons in Serie A, with the most recent being in 2016/2017. Prior to the playoffs, three other teams had been promoted to Serie B: Avellino, Padova, and Virtus Entella. Thousands of fans and inhabitants from adjacent municipalities gathered in the city's streets just minutes after the last whistle, at midnight, to celebrate the team's victory. A crowd that then merged with the roughly 20,000 supporters who had followed the nail-biting match at the Adriatico Cornacchia stadium, which literally erupted with a roar of liberation after goalkeeper Plizzari saved the final penalty.
