On an abandoned oil platform, the sailing ship Astral of the NGO Open Arms rescued 54 individuals over the course of the Saturday and Sunday night. They had been out of Libya for five days, three of which were spent imprisoned on the platform they had managed to reach following the wreckage of the dinghy on which they were sailing. On the platform, one of the two women who were present gave birth to an infant last Friday, while the other had given birth a few days prior. In addition to the two newborns, there were two very young children among the 54 people. "It was a complex rescue", say the humanitarian workers of the sailing ship Astral, which landed in Lampedusa. “This is yet another narrowly avoided tragedy, made even more striking by the presence of two newborns and two children. If we hadn't intervened, owing to the alerts we received from Alarm Phone and, later, the Seabird plane, it would have been another tragic story. We will not stop reiterating the necessity for an emergency shift in migration policies that is capable of genuinely respecting and ensuring the right to life".
