Luciano Spalletti's adventure at the helm of the Italian national team has come to an end. After the heavy defeat in Norway and the criticism that rained down from all sides - including FIGC President Gabriele Gravina - the Tuscan coach announced in a press conference his farewell: "I met with the president, we confronted each other. He informed me of the exoneration. It was not my intention to leave, but I take note. I will sign the consensual termination after the game against Moldova". Despite the relationship described as “very good” with Gravina, Spalletti acknowledged the need for change: "Some negative results have been there, and it is right to look for the best. Tomorrow I will still be on the bench, from the day after tomorrow I will no longer collect. I received all possible support from the federation, but the results speak for themselves, and I take responsibility". With visible bitterness, the coach admitted, "I am disappointed in myself. I was convinced I could do better, but the results were not up to the mark. I thought that, despite difficulties, we would have made it to the World Cup". No alibi, not even in relations with the players: "I sought dialogue and closeness with everyone. Maybe I smoothed too much, I sought hugs and understanding. I would like to close with a victory, not with the figure made in Norway". Finally, Spalletti appealed to his own: "I expect a reaction. These guys, for me, are the right ones to take Italy back to where it deserves to be. We need awareness, but also enthusiasm and a sense of belonging”.
