Artificial Intelligence is becoming an increasingly habitual presence in the school life of Italian students. According to a new survey conducted by TGM Research for NoPlagio, a platform for monitoring plagiarism and the use of AI in texts, the use of generative Artificial Intelligence tools among 16- to 18-year-olds has increased significantly within a year. In 2024, 86% of students claimed to use AI, while today the percentage has reached 97% of the total. Frequency of use has also changed: weekly use has risen from 33% to 51%, and daily use, from 8% to 19%, has more than doubled. At the same time, the number of those who say they use AI only occasionally drops. What is it mainly used for? In first place remains information seeking (76%, up from 71% last year), followed by learning (42%, up 9%). Those who rely on AI to answer school tests are also increasing slightly. The use of Artificial Intelligence to do homework remains stable: 59% this year, up from 60% last year. However, use for writing essays and projects has grown significantly to 75% (+10%). Despite its widespread use, awareness of the importance of responsible use remains strong among students: 56% think it is okay to use tools such as ChatGPT at school or at work, as long as they are under supervision to avoid cases of plagiarism. Finally, the perception that AI will be an integral part of future life is growing: 82% of students think so (it was 68% in 2024). 36% believe that AI can be a real help in daily life, although 60% remain concerned about excessive or uncontrolled use, particularly among girls. In addition, those who do not believe AI can generate discriminatory content increase slightly (23%), while 58% urge using these tools with caution.
