Everything seemed ready, but in the end the white smoke did not come: Claudio Ranieri will not be the new technical commissioner of the Italian national team. After days of reflection, the Roman coach decided to decline the FIGC's offer. Ranieri reportedly made his decision out of respect for commitments already made with Roma, where he recently took on a role as technical adviser. Although the Friedkins had given him carte blanche to consider the possibility of a dual position, Ranieri chose not to break his word. “The temptation was strong, coaching Italy is an honor for any technician,” said Ranieri, “but I have reflected and decided to remain available to Roma in my new position in full”. Also clarifying any doubts was an important clarification: “The Friedkins gave me their full support for whatever decision I had made, but the choice was mine alone”.
