Crimes against person and property are declining in Italy. The new Istat report for the two-year period 2022-2023 indicates that the number of families who were targets of home intrusions, vehicle damage, pickpocketing, robberies, assaults, and threats has decreased in comparison to 2015/16. Muggings, on the other hand, remain consistent, although online frauds involving the use of digital banking services are on the rise. Crimes are most prevalent among individuals residing in areas that are considered at risk of crime (5.9%) and in major cities (5.3%), as opposed to the national average of 2.3%. More than six out of ten victims report they have been victims of more than one crime of the same sort in the 12 months preceding the survey, a figure that remains lower than in 1997/98, when the rate was 73.5%. In terms of reporting, vehicle thefts stand out, with nearly all cases reported (100% for vans, around 98% for motorcycles and cars). Assault complaints are also on the rise, jumping from 19.9% in 2015/16 to 40.6% currently. For home burglaries, the thief entered by forcing the front entrance in 28.6% of cases (a significant increase compared to 19.8% seven years ago), while 30.7% took advantage of exposed areas such as windows, balconies, garages, or open doors.
