'Monica Vitti: La Modernista', the first North American retrospective exclusively dedicated to the iconic Italian actress, will run until June 19 at New York's Film at Lincoln Center. The event, curated by Cinecittà in conjunction with Lincoln Center, features 14 legendary movies, several of which have been restored to 4K resolution. Vitti is recognized as a major protagonist in an unforgettable season in Italian film, from Michelangelo Antonioni's trilogy of incommunicability (L'avventura, La notte, L'eclisse) to the unexpected move to comedy. Opening the retrospective was Mario Monicelli’s 'The Girl with the Pistol', presented in a newly restored world premiere. Other standout titles include 'I Married You for Fun' by Salce and 'I Know That You Know That I Know' by Alberto Sordi, also restored and making their world debuts. The event is a tribute to the talent of a woman who has been able to establish herself in a landscape that is dominated by great male actors such as Sordi, Gassman, and Mastroianni, as well as directors such as Scola, Buñuel, and Losey. An actress who has successfully captured the modern and free spirit of Italian cinema.
