During the presentation of the 2024 Annual Report, Enzo Serata, director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), issued the following warning: "The risk of money laundering in Italy is very significant". Corruption, extortion, tax evasion, drug trafficking, and corporate crimes are some of the most common forms of money laundering. From 2023 to April 2025, the FIU received nearly 48,000 positive feedbacks from the Guardia di Finanza, of which over 84% were related to high or medium-high risk reports. An estimated 15% of suspicious transactions are directly linked to organized crime, while an additional 18% demonstrate indirect connections. A third of recorded operations involve cash and tax fraud, which is frequently associated with transfers abroad to virtual IBANs. “Corruption", Serata emphasized, “undermines trust in institutions and facilitates criminal infiltration into public administration".
