What should have been his last day on duty ended in tragedy. Carlo Legrottaglie, a 59-year-old brigadier originally from Ostuni, was shot and killed at dawn in the industrial area of Francavilla Fontana, along the road to Grottaglie, during a police intervention following a robbery report.
Legrottaglie, who was patrolling with a fellow officer, responded to an emergency call about a robbery at a gas station on the outskirts of town. The two intercepted a suspicious vehicle— a dark-colored Lancia Y—carrying the suspects. A chase ensued, first by car, with multiple collisions in the surrounding countryside, and then on foot.
During the pursuit, Legrottaglie tried to apprehend one of the fleeing suspects but was fatally shot. Initial reports suggest he may have managed to return fire and injure his attacker before collapsing.
A large-scale manhunt was launched immediately, with a helicopter deployed to assist in locating the fugitives. Within a few hours, both were found. One of the suspects, seriously injured in the exchange, later died. The second was taken into custody.
Legrottaglie was set to begin his leave on June 13 and retire in July. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. The incident has prompted widespread condolences from political leaders and institutions, and the Carabinieri Corps mourns the loss of a colleague remembered for his service and dedication.
