On the eve of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The crises in the Middle East and Ukraine were at the center of the discussions, also in view of the upcoming NATO Summit in The Hague and within the framework of transatlantic relations. Meloni confirmed with Merz her intention to hold a new edition of the Intergovernmental Summit between Italy and Germany in Rome in 2026, reaffirming her desire to maintain close coordination on key European agenda issues such as competitiveness and combating irregular migration. During the bilateral discussion with Starmer, the British Prime Minister emphasized the strength of relations with Italy, describing Meloni as "a person with an open mind" and reaffirmed their agreement on major international issues. The two presidents also discussed defense cooperation, specifically the G-Cap program, as well as the battle against human trafficking. Meloni expressed her satisfaction with the United Kingdom's cooperation on the migration issue, emphasizing Italy's dedication to bringing the matter to the G7's attention. Finally, prior to the summit's official start, Meloni participated in an informal discussion with Macron, Merz, Starmer, and Canadian Mark Carney, the first conversation between the leaders over the summit's activities.
