The new entrance fee to enter Venice during the busiest days of the summer has already brought in over 3.5 million euros for the municipality. A measure that is intended to regulate tourist movements, but it is not without criticism. The Federation of Inter-categorical Trade Unions, in particular, is concerned, claiming that the tax is economically discriminatory because it penalizes people who cannot afford it. Some activists have chosen to enter the city without a reservation in order to raise the issue, accepting the fine with the goal of appealing to the Justice of the Peace, with the hope that the case will finally reach the Constitutional Court. However, the timing is not in their favor: due to a persistent scarcity of magistrates in the Venice Justice of the Peace's office, the first hearing has been pushed back to 2029. In the meantime, the price does not appear to deter most tourists, who continue to come into the city with very few complaints.
