Fabriano, a town famous for its paper manufacturing and watermarking, an invention introduced by Fabriano's master papermakers in the second half of the 13th century, is an intriguing place to visit in the province of Ancona. It is an Italian city that is a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities group, alongside Bologna, and is particularly renowned for its exceptional handcrafted paper manufacturing. Those interested in exploring the area can begin with religious architecture, such as the Cathedral of San Venanzio, dating back to the 17th century, which houses the Chapel of San Lorenzo frescoed by Allegretto Nuzi in 1360. Additionally, the convent complex of San Domenico is a must-see destination. It is home to the Museum of Paper and Watermark and features two priceless 15th-century cloisters, as well as the chapter room's decoration, which was painted by Antonio da Fabriano around 1480. Among the churches, it is worth mentioning the Church of San Filippo, the Church of San Biagio and San Romualdo, the Church of Sant'Agostino (dating back to the late 13th century and with two important Gothic chapels entirely frescoed by the Master of Sant'Emiliano), the Church of San Nicolò, and the Church of San Benedetto. Additional noteworthy sites include the Oratorio del Gonfalone, the San Salvatore Abbey in Val di Castro, which dates back to 1000, the hermitage of San Biagio in Caprile, the Podestà Palace (built in the mid-13th century), the Sturinalto Fountain, the Palazzo del Comune, the Loggiato San Francesco, the former hospital of Santa Maria del Buon Gesù - an elegant example of late Gothic architecture now hosting the Bruno Molajoli Art Gallery—and the 19th-century Teatro Gentile. In addition to the many monuments and historical sites, the cultural roots are strengthened by gourmet traditions and annual festivals. In the first case, standout products include the renowned Fabriano salami, a traditional cured meat from the Marche region made with chunks of pork fat, the local sheep breed known as the 'Fabrianese', and among the wines, the Verdicchio di Matelica DOC. Among the festivities is the much-anticipated Palio di San Giovanni Battista in June, which concludes with the 'Sfida del Maglio' (Hammer Challenge), in which four blacksmiths, one from each neighborhood, compete to forge a key. Other historical re-enactments during the event include the Historical Parade, the Medieval Villages, which depict scenes of life in the past, and the Popular Games, which include tug-of-war competitions, stilt races, jug races, and archery tournaments. During the Palio, the town draws tourists, curious visitors, and many emigrants returning to their families to relive traditions.
