"The history of Italian migration is a vital component of our national identity. From the great migrations following Italy's unification to the numerous departures after WWII, generations of Italians have found better destinies outside our country, effectively supporting its recovery and development with significant financial remittances over the last century". These were the remarks of President Sergio Mattarella, who met yesterday in the Quirinale with a delegation from the General Council of Italians Abroad, gathered in plenary session until Friday. "Their contribution, from a broader perspective, has also created precious ties between Italy and the host countries; ties fueled by respect and admiration for what they have been able to achieve, and, moreover, in spreading the multiple expressions of our country's culture", continued Mattarella. "The Italian communities have been able to bring Italy 'close' at all latitudes, as emphasized by Dr. Prodi. Even in the most isolated locations, they have served as real ambassadors for Italian-speaking culture. This is an important aspect of the Republic's international politics, promoting principles such as dialogue, hard work, hospitality, and peace.
