An appeal to rediscover Christ's centrality and deliver the Gospel to society's most vulnerable places: this is the essence of Pope Leo XIV's message to Italian bishops, welcomed in audience at the Vatican. It is the new Pontiff's first episcopal conference since being elected as the 266th successor of Peter on May 8. The Pope requested a "renewed impetus in the proclamation and transmission of the faith" during a period of "great fragmentation". Returning to the Gospel's roots, he explained, entails assisting each individual in developing a personal relationship with Jesus through a mission capable of intercepting even the most remote individuals. Central to this path is the renewal of catechesis and the languages of proclamation. Among the challenges identified by Leo XIV, the dignity of the human person is currently being challenged by phenomena such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and the culture of data. “The person is not a system of algorithms", he stated, “but a creature, a relationship, a mystery". As a result, he anticipated that the synodal road would involve a thorough contemplation on humanity, without which "ethics is reduced to a code and faith risks becoming disembodied". In his speech, the Pope exhorted dioceses to support concrete peace initiatives, nonviolent education, and conflict resolution. According to him, "every community should become a house of peace, where forgiveness is preserved and hostility is suppressed". In conclusion, Leo XIV identified four coordinates for a healthy Church: proclamation, peace, human dignity, and dialogue, encouraging bishops to be "courageous in choices" and not be afraid to walk with those who are disadvantaged. "No one can stop you from standing by the people and from bringing the Gospel to the everyday places where hope and happiness are needed by all, including ourselves", he stated.
