Reports of alleged bank scams to the Bank of Italy are growing: more than 730 cases were reported in the first months of 2024, an increase of 32% over the previous year. This is revealed in the annual report of the Central Institute, which shows that the theft of credentials and access codes to bank accounts is the most frequent type of fraud. More than half of the cases occurred through social engineering techniques - such as smishing, vishing and phishing - often combined with spoofing. In other incidents, scammers were able to trick victims into making direct transfers or payments. Despite the increase in scams, in 54% of cases, customers had their reports successful, with banks and financial institutions granting all or part of their requests. This is an improvement from 2023, when the percentage stood at 50%.
