Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani appeals for European Union unity in the face of escalation in the Middle East. In an interview with Il Messaggero newspaper, Tajani stresses the need for cohesive European action, warning against the risks of fragmentation among individual states: "Woe if the countries of our continent continue to move separately. We must learn from the mistakes of the past, like in Libya with the fall of Gaddafi". For Tajani, it is time to build a “genuine European sovereignty”, capable of defending the EU's common interests also in the field of foreign policy and security, modeled on the coordination already achieved on tariffs. Italy, he says, will continue to make its diplomatic resources and good relations with Washington available to Europe. In light of tensions with Iran and the possibility of direct U.S. intervention, the minister reiterates the importance of dialogue: "The G7 line remains that of a return to negotiations on the nuclear issue. The table mediated by Oman is the only viable path, and Italy supports it to the end". Tajani also acknowledges the growing danger related to terrorism: "The risk is always there, but Italian intelligence is ready. We continue to work to ensure the security of citizens and contribute to de-escalation. Now is the time for diplomacy, not weapons".
