Mondadori, the most important Italian publisher with a big network of outlets, enters the secondhand book market. It will not sell them directly; rather, it will accept them in its bookstores and provide the owner with a voucher for an amount equivalent to the titles' value. The gift card can be used in Mondadori stores and on the company's website. Zeercle, a startup founded and led by CEO Eric Gagnaire that is already operational in France, Germany, and Austria, specializes in the provision of book repurchase services in Europe and will subsequently manage the placement of the books on various purchasing platforms, including Amazon, Momox, and eBay. The Italian bookstore network, with over 300 bookstores joining the initiative, becomes the launch partner for Zeercle’s debut in Italy. The collaboration underscores how the used book market remains a symbol of economic convenience, while gaining increasing importance across its various facets, from novels to collectible books. So much so that, in addition to specialized platforms, companies based on the Vinted model have expanded their product offerings from clothing to books. One peculiar feature of this market is that, despite its significance, there is no information regarding its economic value. Mondadori’s new initiative covers fiction, non-fiction, and children’s literature, and classics.
