The share of public debt held by foreigners is increasing. As evidenced by the Bank of Italy's debt publication, it increased from 31.9 to 32.4% of the total in March. Other residents' share (mostly families and non-financial enterprises) fell marginally to 14.3 percent (from 14.4 percent). The Bank of Italy's debt share fell to 20.2% in April, down from 20.5% the previous month. Last April, public administration debt increased by €30.1 billion compared to the previous month, reaching €3,063.5 billion. Central administrations (29.9 billion) are the primary cause of the debt increase, while local administrations and social security institutions maintained a nearly unchanged level of debt. Along with the debt, taxes have risen: in April, tax collections recorded in the state budget totaled 41.9 billion, a 3.2% (1.3 billion) increase over the same month in 2024.
