It is appropriate "that the Italian Government aspires to participate in the implementation phase of the World Health Organization pandemic agreement to enable the population to benefit from the health and economic advantages that arise from international collaboration". The Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei has issued this appeal in response to the Meloni government's decision to abstain from voting in the EU Commission on the approval and, as a result, the adoption of the Plan. The Accademia dei Lincei is a highly esteemed institution and one of the oldest scientific institutions in Italy and Europe. According to the institution, the reasons why Italy should backtrack are contained in a document in which the WHO Global Pandemic Agreement is regarded as "a victory for public health, science, and multilateral action and will ensure that the world is better protected from future pandemic threats. Furthermore, it is a recognition by the international community that the citizens of various countries, civil societies, and economies must not be left in a state of extreme vulnerability, where they may experience losses similar to those experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic". Hence, the appeal to the Italian government to abandon health sovereignty.
