Salernitana bids farewell to Serie B in the worst possible way: the return match of the play-out against Sampdoria has been halted permanently due to Granata fans throwing items and firecrackers. The match, held at the Arechi Stadium, ended 2–0 for Sampdoria, who will officially be awarded a 3–0 win by forfeit. The Campania team is consequently demoted to Serie C, while Sampdoria is saved. The tension was palpable even before the game began: Salernitana, coming off a tough week due to food poisoning that injured several players, was expected to make a difficult comeback after the 2-0 defeat in the first leg at Marassi. However, the match quickly turned against the home team, with Coda scoring in the 38th minute and Sibilli scoring in the 49th minute putting Sampdoria up 2-0 in the second leg, bringing the overall score to 4-0. The game was interrupted for the first time in the 65th minute when the Salernitana Curva started throwing a large number of objects onto the pitch, including smoke bombs, firecrackers, and seats. Referee Daniele Doveri halted the game and sent the teams back to their dressing rooms. After almost half an hour, an attempt was made to restart the match, but new throws caused Doveri to end the game after only thirty seconds of play. This is not the first time the Serie B playouts have finished off the pitch; Brescia and Cosenza had a similar incident two years ago. As in that case, the match will not be validated, and the visiting team will be granted the victory by forfeit. For Salernitana, this concludes a season that was plagued by tensions and ultimately resulted in their relegation to the professional league. Sampdoria, on the other hand, finds salvation forty days after mathematical relegation by capitalizing on League decisions and playouts that restarted following the Brescia incident.
