At the Corpus Domini celebration in Mortora, a hamlet in Piano di Sorrento, Don Rito Maresca decided to wear a chasuble with the colors of the Palestinian flag: red, green, black, and white. A meaningful gesture followed by words that caught the attention of those present. "While we adore the broken bread, in Gaza, innocent bodies are broken", remarked the parish priest during the homily, according to Il Mattino. A reflection that blended the feast's liturgical component with the more dramatic crisis in the Middle East. “This year, I couldn’t get out of my head the image of those bodies—broken not on the altar, but under the bombs, amidst the rubble", he added. Don Maresca also denounced the international community's silence, citing the United States' "active complicity" and the "cowardly silence" of several European nations. "Israel is also exporting war to Iran, diverting attention away from what is going on in Palestine", he stated, urging the faithful not to look away from human suffering.
