On Monday morning, a giant 400-square-meter banner was unfurled in Piazza San Marco in Venice by activists from Greenpeace Italy, along with the British action group Everyone Hates Elon, in protest against the upcoming wedding between Jeff Bezos and his partner Lauren Sanchez. The banner was written in English as follows: "If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax". A straightforward and provocative message addressed to one of the world's richest men. "Bezos embodies an economic and social model that is leading us to collapse", said Simona Abbate, spokesperson for Greenpeace Italy. "Climate injustice and social injustice are becoming increasingly intertwined: on the one hand, the arrogance of a handful of billionaires, whose lifestyles are detrimental to the environment; on the other, individuals who endure the consequences of the environmental crisis on a daily basis". Activists argue that taxing the enormous profits of the wealthy and large industries, particularly those related to fossil fuels and the defense sector, would be a concrete step toward better social and environmental equality.
