A request for an official briefing to the Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, concerning the wedding of Amazon magnate Jeff Bezos, taking place in Venice from tomorrow until June 28th. The request was made in the Chamber of Deputies by AVS representative Angelo Bonelli, joined by M5S. "Venice will be locked down for three days to allow the millionaire wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez", says Bonelli. "An entire city has been converted into a runway for the ultra-rich, with inhabitants pushed to the outskirts. I urge Minister Piantedosi to protect the right to demonstrate: it is unacceptable to suspend the freedom to protest in order to protect the luxury of super-rich millionaires. We need a global tax on the super-rich: a trillion dollars per year to combat poverty, hunger, and the climate challenges. Today, people are dying of hunger. If Bezos can rent Venice for three days, he should also pay taxes on his fortune". "Bezos", adds the Green Party leader, "is also the owner of a company, Amazon, under investigation for exploitation of workers, subjected to inhuman rhythms and monitored by algorithms that measure their productivity. And while the city is locked down, Amazon sells gadgets for the Israeli army amid a war where Palestinian civilians are being massacred. This, too, is business. This, too, is unacceptable. Who will pay for the event's security? The police forces mobilized for three days? What about helicopters, closures, and limitations? Should the Italian government send personnel and resources to defend a millionaire's wedding? Or will Bezos pay?", Bonelli concludes. The Fdi deputy Salvatore Caiata responds, "We do not agree that Piantedosi should report to the Chamber on this matter. The Minister of the Interior is not a wedding planner. We cannot ask the government to report to the Chamber on every topic; it’s absurd".
