Ahead of the Jubilee 2025, the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development is launching an appeal for the forgiveness of ecological debt of the most disadvantaged countries. The thematic note published today, titled “Jubilee 2025: remission of ecological debt”, recalls the ancient Jubilee tradition and the call contained in the Bull Spes non confundit, which calls for debt forgiveness for the poorest nations. The concept of ecological debt refers to the costs that excessive consumption of natural resources imposes on future generations and the planet itself. According to the Department, this type of debt - like financial debt - disproportionately burdens the least developed countries, undermining not only their economic growth but also their human progress.
