Coop Alleanza 3.0, the largest large retail cooperative group in Italy, has decided to symbolically remove some products of Israeli origin from the shelves. These include peanuts, tahini sauce and Sodastream devices, including refills. The decision comes following an ethics committee report submitted to the previous board of directors. The cooperative, which has more than 350 shops in regions such as Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Abruzzo, Basilicata, and Puglia, explained that this was a symbolic act but consistent with its principles. “We cannot remain indifferent to the violence affecting the people of the Gaza Strip”, an official note reads. In addition to this initiative, Coop has joined the national “Coop For Refugees” campaign to raise funds for humanitarian assistance projects not only in Gaza, but also in Lebanon, Ukraine and Sudan. For the past few weeks, Gaza Cola, a soft drink designed in 2023 by a group of Palestinian entrepreneurs, has also appeared on shelves (and online, where available). Proceeds support humanitarian initiatives, including the reconstruction of Al Karama Hospital in the north of the Strip. The drink's slogan, “The Taste of Freedom”, has become a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
