The contribution of foreign workers is crucial to Italy's GDP, but also to the economic development of their home countries. Considering that remittances destined for foreign countries in 2024 amount to €8.3 billion, it is clear that these workers are a real engine for the emancipation of their homelands: this is what emerges from the findings of the Domina Observatory on Domestic Work, based on data from the Bank of Italy. Among the Top States receiving these remittances are some countries characterized by a strong presence of domestic servants in Italy, such as the Philippines, Ukraine and Moldova. According to the Domina 2024 report, a contribution to GDP of €15.8 billion (0.8%) was derived from domestic workers in Italy in 2023. Considering only the regulated jobs belonging to this sector - which includes domestic helpers and caregivers - foreigners also make up more than 68% of the total in 2024, according to INPS data. Among the Top 20 communities of origin of the 5.3 million foreigners in Italy as of January 1, 2024, the highest values are registered among Bangladeshi citizens, who sent an average of about €604 per capita per month: their country is thus the first among destination countries and received a total of €1.4 billion in 2024. Pakistan and the Philippines record values above 300 euros per capita per month, followed, with lower figures, by Peru, Sri Lanka, Ecuador, India, Senegal, Nigeria and Brazil.
